Grounded Wisdom: More Than Human Workshop

Grounded Wisdom is a workshop and card-based methodology that uses the ecological wisdom and life cycles of soil to help people reflect on transition, creativity, community and regenerative futures.

Recently, Feeldwork Futures ran two Grounded Wisdom workshops as part of The Space Between with Findhorn Bay Arts. The sessions invited participants to think about their own “space between”: those moments of pause, uncertainty, emergence or change that sit between one cycle and the next. Through card draws, prompts and collective reflection, the workshops explored how soil can offer both a framework and a language for these in-between moments.

At the heart of the workshops is a simple but powerful idea: soil teaches us that everything is cyclical. Nothing is static, nothing is wasted, and endings are rarely absolute. Instead, soil shows us transformation, dormancy, decomposition, renewal and growth as part of the same living process. This offers a hopeful and grounded way of thinking about creative practice, ecological work and community change.

Participants were encouraged to step out of solution mode and into a slower, more reflective space of noticing, speculation and conversation. Together, we asked questions such as

What energy is present in this cycle?
Are we designing endings into our work? How do we make room for growth, rest, uncertainty or fallow periods?

These questions opened up wider reflections on how we work, what we value, and how more-than-human systems might help us imagine different ways of living and creating.

Grounded Wisdom itself takes the form of a 78-card deck inspired by soil, designed as a tool to connect people to soil, ecology and environmental thinking in accessible and imaginative ways. The deck can be used to support reflection, creative practice, facilitation and regenerative design, helping people and organisations think more deeply about cycles, care, interdependence and future-making.
